The United Kingdom lays its Queen to rest

HM Queen Elizabeth II has been laid to rest during a ceremony in Westminster Abbey attended by dignitaries around the world.

The Queen, who passed away on 8th September, ruled the United Kingdom for 70 years, making her the nation’s longest ever serving monarch.

It is the first time ever a monarch’s funeral has been televised, allowing millions around the to be part of an event previously only experienced by a select few.

The first state funeral since Winston Churchill’s in 1965 began shortly before 11am with the Queen’s coffin arriving followed by members of her immediate family.

Funeral guests included U.S President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron and Indian President Droupadi Murmu, along with numerous Kings and Queens from around the world.

The sombre ceremony included several hymns and readings as the 2,000 or so guests within the Abbey paid their final respects.

A minute of silence was held with images of people watching the funeral across the Commonwealth shown on television screens.

Once the service had concluded, the Queen’s coffin began its long route through the streets of London with thousands expected to line the streets.

The procession is then scheduled to return to Westminster Abbey where the Queen will be laid to rest within the King George VI memorial chapel at Windsor, next to her mother and father.
